Couture with character - one artist's collection up for auction
National renowned artist Viva Gibb's fashion collection is up for auction on Sunday 1st July 2018 at Steve Graham Auction warehouse in Woodend and features many one of a kind pieces that only a true artiste could possess.
Whilst you can find Gibb's work displayed in the National Gallery of Victoria, National Gallery of New South Wales, the State Library and The National Library, you can also get a real sense of her theatrical and eclectic flare through her lifelong clothing collection.
Daughter of Viva, Sybil Gibb, has a memory with each piece up for auction.
"The best pieces of the collection are the Edwardian day dresses, and the purple velvet ensemble."
"These were all found in a case on the side of the road in South Melbourne on a hard rubbish day in the 1970s," Gibb said.
Not all items from Gibb's collection were luckily stumbled upon, many other pieces were collected over the years through markets, op shopping, garage sales and hand-me-downs.
"She had a great eye and was a caretaker, who saw the value in these old things and wanted to preserve them and live surrounded by them", Gibb said of her late mother.
Before Gibb became known for her photography, painting and her political posters, one of her earliest talents was dress making which is where her passion for style began.
Representative in her collection, her style was flamboyant and encapsulated her vibrant personality and individuality.
Wearables on sale include vintage labels to the likes of Pierre Cardin, Bernhard Hammerman, Nettie Vogues London and MAGG, just to name a few.
Viva Gibb (born Jillian Gibb) passed late last year from cancer at age 72 and is remembered for being true to her art.
"It's very hard to say goodbye but it’s very important for us that these pieces are appreciated and exhibited."
"Every piece of her collection tells a story to us, we want people to continue and create their own stories." Gibb said.
Viewing is on Friday & Saturday 1pm -5pm and Auction Day from 8.30am
